Propagation
Take cuttings from basal shoots or stem sections.
Sow fresh seed during spring in a well-drained media.
Botanic information
Leaf: The large cordate leaves have a leathery texture and are deeply pinnately segmented. The segments have undulating margins and with the dull-green underside is prominently veined. It has a long petiole that scars the stem after falling.
Flower: The small petal-less flowers are arranged in a spadix that is enclosed in a colourful spathe that is up to 300mm (1ft) long and appear during summer.
Fruit: The small seed is not commonly seen and the plant is normally reproduced vegetatively.
Philodendron
This genus of plants is suited to indoor growth as in their native environment they grow in dense forest with dappled light and misty moist atmosphere and preferring to be left undisturbed.
When used indoor place in a brightindirect position and maintainhumidityby placing in a saucer of water. Keep the leaves clean and mist with water during summer or when the winter heater has dried the air.
Re-pot every two to three years with a drainage layer in the bottom of the pot of rubble then mulch the top with moist peat moss.
They prefer a constant temperature of 18ºC (65ºF) though will tolerate a wide range.
