Propagation
Sow fresh seeds during autumn and place in a protected environment to germinate. Seedling variation occurs regularly and seeds are prone to fungal attack.

Take semi-hardwood cuttings of non-flowering shoots from late summer to early autumn and placed in a protected environment with bottom heat.


Botanic information
Leaf: The leaves are elliptical to narrow obovate, up to 30 mm wide. The upper surface is glossy green the very reddish mid rib and the underside is pale green. When young, the leaf is purplish red and has an acute apex with a short petiole.

Flower: The violet purple tubulate flowers have 4-perianth segments and are arranged in an axillary raceme that is up to 70mm (2? in) long and appear appearing from late spring to summer.


Fruit: The small fruit is a 2-locular capsule that is not commonly seen and the plant is normally reproduced vegetatively.

General information

Hebe requires an annual light prune to maintain a compact habit. If the plant becomes leggy a hard prune may result in dieback of the plant.

Hebe grows and produces more flowers in full sun, but will tolerate some shade. They are generally pH adaptable preferring and organic rich moist soil but care must be taken not to allow the roots to dry out. They also tolerate cold conditions and a widely cultivated in the UK and parts of the USA.
