Propagation
Sow fresh seed if obtainable.
Division of the clump from autumn to spring is in order to maintain true to type.
Take cuttings in spring, and place in a well-drained moist media but not wet to avoid rot and fungus.
Space 300mm (12in) apart when planting out.
Culture
Once established this plant requires little care and may be divided every four years to rejuvenate or contain.
Botanic information
Leaf: The leaves are narrow-lanceolate to oblanceolate and the margin is entire to pinnatifid with variable lobes. The undersides of leaves have a whitish tomentose and taper towards the base.
Flower: The large flowers are solitary and held above the foliage on a peduncle up to 300mm (1ft) long and appear from late spring to early summer. The colour range is from yellow, pink, and gold to red and there are many cultivars available. The flower closes at night or if the plant is in a shaded position or during cloudy days.
Fruit: Seed is difficult to obtain and will give a variety of flower colours. The small seed is not commonly used and the plant is normally reproduced vegetatively to maintain true to type.
