Propagation
Sow fresh seed during early spring in flats and prick out when large enough to handle.
Divide the tubers during winter and replant at a depth of 50 mm (2in). This form of propagation should be carried out only when necessary, as the plant dislikes root disturbance.
Botanic information
Leaf: The trifoliate leaves have 3-leaflets that have 3-5 lobes with dentate margins and acute apex. The leaflets stalks are long and pubescent and the leaves stand erect. During spring the new growth has a coppery tinge that persists along the margins.
Flower: The crateriform flowers have 5-6 spreading showy sepals that are blue, lavender, white, mauve to scarlet and pink. The flowers have a long pedicel and are arranged in an upright umbel that is accompanied by a whorl of leafy bracts and appear during autumn.
Fruit: The small achene is accompanied by the persistent long plumose style. The small seeds are viable and self so readily, but the plant is normally reproduced vegetatively to keep true to type.
